Our approaches

Different approaches for different minds

Every mind is different. That’s why our practitioners are trained in a variety of treatment approaches – so you can find a style that suits you.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is based on the idea that difficult emotions and thoughts should be noticed, not avoided. Through experiential exercises like mindfulness, you will develop psychological flexibility and learn to live according to your values.

Applied Neuroscience

Applied Neuroscience considers the relationship between the mind, body, environment, and social context. It seeks to inform and enhance treatment outcomes through neuroscientific research.

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)

AAT, or pet therapy, uses trained animals – such as dogs or cats – to support a patient’s therapeutic goals. Alongside the animal’s trainer, the practitioner guides the session to help reduce stress, improve social interactions, and manage difficult emotions.

Clinical Hypnotherapy

Clinical Hypnotherapy helps patients access a state of deep relaxation, where they can process issues associated with stress, anxiety, pain management, stress, phobias, and self-improvement. It can only be used in consultation with a qualified, trained healthcare provider.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT empowers you to identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours. By doing so, you can better manage distressing emotional states and improve your overall mood.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

CPT is a trauma-focused branch of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Through integrative reframing techniques, you can learn to process and challenge thoughts and beliefs related to traumatic experiences.

Cold Facial Immersion (CFI) Therapy

More than a splash of cold water, CFI uses biofeedback, breathing retraining and more to counteract negative cognitions and reduce emotional dysregulation. It is particularly helpful for treating anxiety disorders, depression, and trauma.

Couples Counselling

Couples counselling provides a structured and supportive space to improve communication, deepen understanding, and work through challenges in your relationship. Using evidence-based approaches—such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) or the Gottman Method—our psychologists help couples strengthen their connection and navigate conflict with greater awareness and empathy.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a comprehensive therapy that combines CBT techniques with mindfulness practices. An increasingly sought-after treatment for people with Borderline Personality Disorder, DBT focuses on developing skills to manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and promote a sense of balance and wellbeing.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, to help process and reduce the distress associated with traumatic memories.

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT emphasises the importance of emotions in therapy. It aims to help individuals understand and regulate their emotions, leading to increased self-awareness, improved interpersonal relationships, and psychological growth.

Family Therapy

Family Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the dynamics and interactions within a family. It aims to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and promote understanding between family members.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS is an evidence-based approach that identifies and works with an individual’s different subpersonalities or ‘parts’. It aims to cultivate self-compassion, resolve internal conflicts, and promote harmony among these differing parts.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

IPT is a short-term therapy focused on improving interpersonal relationships. It targets specific areas of difficulty – such as grief, interpersonal conflict, social isolation and role transition – to enhance overall wellbeing.

Motivating Interviewing (MI)

MI takes a collaborative approach to explore an individual’s ambivalence towards behavioural change. Your therapist will help you envisage a better future and become ready to achieve it.

Play Therapy for Children

Children’s experiences and knowledge are often communicated through play. Play Therapy is a natural extension of this process. It helps children express themselves, communicate, and resolve emotional difficulties in a safe and supportive environment.

Positive Psychology

Positive Psychology focuses on understanding and nurturing the positive emotions you experience. This approach is used to enhance resilience and identify your strengths – so you can create a richer and more fulfilling life.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy explores your unconscious mind and early life experiences to understand how they influence current thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It aims to promote insight, resolve internal conflict, and foster psychological growth and healing.

Sandplay Therapy

Sandplay Therapy is a nonverbal therapeutic approach where clients – both children and adults –create scenes using miniatures in a tray of sand. It allows symbolic expression, exploration of the unconscious, and emotional healing through play and imagination.

Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy combines elements of CBT with psychodynamic and experiential therapies. Your therapist helps you to understand your ingrained ‘schemas’ (or patterns) that prevent you from achieving your goals.

Solution-focused Therapy

Solution-focused Therapy builds on your innate strengths and resources to find practical solutions to life’s challenges. Your therapist will help you foster a sense of empowerment and hope for a better future.

Systems Therapy

Systems Therapy takes a holistic approach to therapy, focusing on the patterns of behaviour of groups you’re a part of – like family. Analysis takes a back seat, while your therapist moves you towards uncovering practical solutions to challenging interpersonal dynamics.

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy takes a body-centric approach to trauma processing. It uses your somatic experiences as a gateway to the mind, improving awareness and mental health.

Trauma-focused Therapy

Trauma-focused Therapy is grounded in the understanding that traumatic experiences are intimately connected to one’s emotions and behaviours. Through evidence-based techniques, your therapist will help you process trauma, reduce symptoms and gain deeper self-awareness.

Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT)

VRT uses the latest in virtual reality technology to move you towards your therapeutic goals. At Positive Psychology, we use two virtual reality platforms: Amelia Virtual Reality and C2Care. Combined, these platforms have over 250 virtual environments and scenes, which the practitioner can manipulate to match the patient’s narrative. VRT helps a variety of presentations, including anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and addictions.
